Website development cost in India: what actually drives the price

Ask five developers for a quote and you will get five very different numbers for what sounds like the same website. That is rarely dishonesty — it is because the brief left room for five different projects. Here is what genuinely moves the price, so you can compare quotes properly and spend where it pays back.

Why quotes vary so widely

A five-page brochure site and a five-page site with a booking system, payment gateway and customer login share a page count and almost nothing else. Price follows the number of decisions someone has to make on your behalf: how many unique layouts get designed, how much logic gets written, how much of the content someone else has to create, and how long the site has to be looked after once it is live.

What pushes cost up

  • Custom design instead of a purchased or stock theme
  • Every extra unique page layout (not extra content on the same layout)
  • Payments, bookings, logins or any user account area
  • Integrations with a CRM, ERP, inventory or accounting system
  • Multi-language or multi-currency requirements
  • Data migration from an old site with hundreds of existing pages
  • Content, photography and copywriting when it is not supplied

What brings cost down

  • Sharing final content and images before the build starts
  • Reusing one strong layout across similar pages
  • Deciding one person on your side who approves designs
  • Starting with the pages that win enquiries, adding the rest later
  • Choosing a stack that fits the site, instead of over-engineering it

The platform choice changes the shape of the cost

The cheapest build is not always the cheapest website. Some of the cost simply moves from the build into the years afterwards.

WordPress

Fastest to launch for content-led sites and easiest for a non-technical team to update. Costs move later, into plugins, licences, hosting and security upkeep.

Modern React stack

Higher build effort, far better speed scores and no plugin licence trail. Best for product sites, dashboards and anything with custom logic.

Page builders (Wix, Squarespace, Framer)

Lowest entry cost with a monthly fee forever, and real limits once you need custom features or serious SEO control.

The running costs nobody mentions

Budget for the domain and hosting, an SSL certificate (usually included), email accounts, any paid plugin or theme licences, backups, and someone actually applying updates. A site left unmaintained for a year is the most common reason a business ends up paying for a rebuild far earlier than it should have.

Six questions to answer before you ask for a quote

Answer these and every quote you receive becomes comparable, because everyone is pricing the same project.

  1. 1.How many genuinely different page layouts do you need?
  2. 2.Who writes the content, and does it exist yet?
  3. 3.Which systems must the site talk to?
  4. 4.Do visitors need to log in, book or pay?
  5. 5.Who updates the site after launch, and how often?
  6. 6.What does success look like — enquiries, orders, or bookings per month?
